MY HAIR STORY

Hey Lovelies,

Trust you are well. I am too thanks for asking! Lol. Every once in a while, it will be nice to just leave a ‘how are you doing today’ comment. Believe me, I read all the comments and I appreciate them.

So I decided to take a little break from writing (yes another script. You will love this one! Can’t wait! ) to gist you about my hair.

It’s no secret how in love with my hair I am. I still maintain that going natural is one of the best decisions I ever made…for my hair and even as a life decision. My relationship with my hair is almost spiritual. I truly love and take care of my hair. I never used to. My hair used to be just another accessory.

I sincerely can’t tell you why I went natural but I’m sure glad I did. I didn’t have bad permed hair, my hair wasn’t falling off or anything and I didn’t particularly like ‘Naturalistas’ lol. I thought they many times with a few exceptions looked unkempt but I wanted to try something new so I went natural. I transitioned for a couple of months and then I did the big chop!

With the big chop came freedom! I loved my tiny winy Afro! I still miss ‘her’ sometimes. I loved the feel and texture of my hair and I knew I was hooked for life. I did a lot of research, watched hair styling videos and boy did I have fun twisting and braiding and doing wash and gos.

I try to wash my hair about once every two weeks, I deep condition at least once a month, sometimes more. It depends on what I feel my hair needs. I do hot oil treatments sometimes as a deep condition. I use my spray bottle everyday because natural hair loves moisture. So I spray my hair with water, use a leave-in conditioner and then a light oil to seal.

I also henna like once every two months or so. Sometimes I do a DIY deep conditioner with yoghurt, honey and oil. I’ve heard of all sorts of DIY conditioning but I haven’t tried a lot of them. Have you? I would love to hear your experiences in the comments. Also if you have any questions, fire away! I will do my best to answer all.

We’ll chat soon! Hugs and kisses

I suggest you do a bit of online research dear but deep condition is simple putting a deep conditioning product in your hair and leaving it in a heat cap for a couple of hours. You wash it off and then you can add your regular leave-in conditioners. I hope this helps

You can check my other blog posts. I think henna makes your hair fuller but that’s just my experience. You have to deep condition often if you henna because it’s very drying.

      Almost three years now

  6. I went natural in 2014, I started transitioning then did the big chop 1 year later. I use diy treatments too but mostly deep oil treatments and once in a while egg conditioning. Going natural was a great decision and I totally enjoy rocking my natural hair!

Hi Omoni, I’m one of those that u inspire with ur hair. I’m on this journey bc of u and Chioma Akpota. One of the numerous things that triggered me to embark on this journey though I’m yet to chop is ur styling. I want to beg for a favour, can u do a video of different styling. I will be most grateful.

I truly, truly love your hair and want to go natural anytime I see it. But I fear the early days…you know, after the big chop, when your hair’s still so low and the ‘fro wouldn’t stretch and all that. I keep asking myself, how will I carry or style my hair during that time? Will the low-cut fit me? How do I grow it out from low-cut to the gorgeous mane you rock? Is it to start making “pepper” and “thread”? Lol…i’m serious tho’…you make it seem so easy ma’am, pls reply. Ehen, have I said I love you yet? I so do! Till tomorrow!

You can transition for a while if you don’t like short hair. I rocked mine when it was short. You can watch YouTube videos for styles for short gros. There’s tons of them. Good luck!

Hello Omini! Good to meet you on this platform. If I had to complete my next sentence with one word, it would be ROCKS! So, what’s the first part? Your hair……..
It’s inspiring to see all the different things you do with your hair.
It takes courage and determination to stay natural.
Like you rightly pointed out, moisture is needed by our hair. It’s just that we never knew.
Thanks for increasing our knowledge base!

Hi dearie, I am also going natural started 6months ago and I must say I love the way my hair is growing soft and strong. I do all the hair treatments you mentioned here and I also do egg, olive oil & coconut oil treatment for rapid growth. Basically after washing your hair you apply egg and olive oil mixed together to your hair, wash it off after an hour then apply coconut oil overnight. This will make your hair grow an inch overnight.

Hi Omoni, your hair is sooo lovely. thanks for the write up…my own challenge is length transitioned in 2013 and my hair can’t even go up in a bun, it’s long when i pull it but curls up so fast. Getting tired and almost thinking of going back to permed which didn’t work for me cos my hair was too light and never stayed in curls. I have checked all the websites, blogs also tried so many products but nothing solves my issue. Is there a way out?

That’s the beauty of natural hair! Shrinkage! You can blow dry it sometimes. Not often and not too much. That way, you can see the length and don’t get discouraged

Buy a leave-in conditioner that you can use everyday. A deep conditioner, you can use when you deep condition your hair about every two weeks or as your hair needs.

So, I have t really experimented withots of DIY deep conditioners cz I had a really bad experience withe the banana and honey mixture I did a while back. Please does honey dry out your hair? You can transition as long as you want. Just take very good care of your new growth. You can start cutting the perms off an inch at a time, that’s way, oga doesn’t notice
